On November 13th I met with Lily at Spanning Cloud Apps Company and Karen with the Buzz Bus Tours to talk about wellness in the workplace and overall health through Yoga. Here is some more information on the Buzz Bus Tour:

We believe that small changes in everyday life create big gains in personal and community wellness. We seek to find and share the best wellness opportunities, so that you can find the small steps to lead a wellness lifestyle. We began our wellness campaign in 2011 with a nationwide tour to showcase the best companies, people, places and things that influence optimal wellness. We took the country by storm – one town, one highway, one person at a time – in our Airstream to generate the “Buzz”. We discovered many great people and places positively providing their communities opportunities to live healthy and active lifestyles. We urge you to meet some of them by viewing our YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/BuzzBusTour

'Lights On AfterSchool Event' with After School Centers on Education (ACE) and Del Valle I.S.D

DVISD ACE celebrated Lights on Afterschool (LoA) on November 6, 2013. LoA is a nationwide celebration that shines a light on the after school programs that keep students safe, inspire them to learn, and help working families. A formal event for students, parents, and administrators to highlight the hard work that everyone has done over the past 4 years within the ACE program. along with several speakers from the Austin community. There was food, photo booth, and photo montage of ACE highlights from the past 4 years, as well as presentations from various student groups, including our ukulele and choir groups.

Spoke on the importance of community parenting, as an ACE parent and teacher at this event with Lead Coordinator at Popham Elementary, Cheyenne Koerth. Very thankful for the support, and diverse variety and enrichment that this program has brought to my own family."As an ACE supporter, and someone that has helped make this program successful in this district, we would be honored to have you speak for to the students, parents, and staff that evening. Any topic related to the importance of afterschool enrichment from your perspective as teacher and ACE parent, and also on the importance of hard work and academics for our students. Thank you for your continued support for the ACE program at DVISD. Your commitment and support as a teacher and parent has helped bring quality afterschool programs to DVISD has been key to the success of the implementation of ACE at each campus.", Edna Parra/ACE Team.

Youth Yoga & AA Youth Harvest Foundation

On June 25th I had the pleasure to share Youth Aroma Yoga with the children in summer program at AAYHF! Sharing a beautiful practice with the Ivy Dolls ages 9-12, teaching them breathing techniques, basic poses, guided meditation and positive affirmations! Their mentor and leader of the group joined the class as well. Ivy Dolls is an all-girls mentoring group that focuses on leadership, education and bonding. The name “Ivy Dolls” derives from the word „Ivy league‟, with the understating that something considered Ivy League has the connotation of being prestigious, rank among the best, and held to a higher standard. Thus, through mentoring, group bonging, and educating young girls, this program attempts to produce “ivy league” young women; women who will exude prestige, demand respect, be cognizant of their worth and be held to high standards.

Then I had the opportunity to meet the teen fitness group of AAYHF ages 13-17 at Pearce Middle School for a 45 minute Yoga session! Engaged them in a Beginners Basics hatha flow, specifically incorporating some power poses, guided meditation and Aromatherpy using Orange essential oil during breathwork. Both Fitness coaches from the program joined the class as well as a mentor for the program.

Growing Roots Organization

On October 17th I shared Yoga en Espanol with families that  just graduated from Growing Roots' 6 week Autism Program! These parents now have the knowledge, resources and support to create the best outcomes for their child with autism. They were able to put together a parent tool kit to navigate their child's educational, therapeutic, medical and community needs. They are now part of the Growing Roots community- they now know they are not alone. And back on June 1st the Growing Roots 2nd Annual Fundraising event at Carver Library accepted a silent auction donation from Aroma Yoga for 2  private yoga sessions! Because of Aroma Yoga's donation, Growing Roots will be able to provide more parents of children with special needs with information, resources, support and empowerment.

Growing Roots empowers families through free classes and support groups that inform, connect and support parents of children with special needs. To learn more and spread the word about this wonderful organization go to www.growingrootsaustin.com.
